Description
Immersive perspective: Using 3D, 360-degree cameras, the film places the viewer directly on the sheer rock faces with Honnold. Many reviewers and viewers have noted that this creates a far more visceral and intense experience than a traditional film, with some finding it almost "too much".
Locations: The series follows Honnold from his home base in the U.S. to the Italian Dolomites and the French Alps. Noteworthy climbs include the American Direct route on the Aiguille du Dru in Chamonix.
Minimalist filmmaking: To maximize the immersive effect, the production strips away many traditional cinematic elements like voice-overs and an extensive musical score. The experience is primarily visual, focusing on the breathtaking and terrifying reality of the climb.
Availability: Alex Honnold: The Soloist VR is available exclusively on Meta Quest VR headsets via Oculus TV.
Behind-the-scenes content: A companion series, Making the Soloist VR, is available on Red Bull TV. It chronicles the immense logistical and technical challenges of filming free-solo climbing with VR equipment in extreme alpine conditions.
